Due to the South Tank being offline for a while, and our bad water issues, we have been increasing the chlorine levels to ensure the Town is getting some protection and helping with the water quality. Increasing the chlorine will help precipitate some of the iron and manganese out of the water. The Town has also shocked the storage tanks (especially the south tank) to ensure we have higher levels of chlorine for killing any bacteria.
The minimum amount of free chlorine required is 0.2 Mg/L. The high allowable level, in a water system is 4.0 Mg/ L. We have increased to have about 1.2 Mg/L. Generally, levels should be around the 1.0 Mg/L. The amounts are Milligrams per Liter, or parts per million. The lower level of chlorine has also contributed to our build- up of material inside the distribution piping.
We realize this has been a change, with a noticeable chlorine smell. The town is planning some additional flushing in areas that have been most affected. We apologize for the inconvenience, but maintaining a safe water system is the Towns priority.
