Indoor Air Quality

If you are advised to stay indoors, keep indoor air as clean as possible.

  1. Keep windows and doors closed.

  2. Run an air conditioner if you have one. Keep the fresh-air intake closed and the filter clean. Use a high-efficiency filter with HEPA or MERV 13 or higher rating.  Air purifiers and filters can be purchased at your local hardware store or online.

  3. If you do not have an air conditioner and it is too warm to stay inside with the windows closed, seek shelter in a designated evacuation center or away from the affected area. Learn more about reducing your smoke exposure indoors.

  4. If you are sensitive to smoke, create a “clean room” in your home. Choose a room with no fireplace and as few windows and doors as possible, such as a bedroom. Use a portable air cleaner in the room. 

  5. Avoid activities that increase indoor pollution: Burning candles, fireplaces, or gas stoves can increase indoor pollution. Vacuuming stirs up particles already inside your home, contributing to indoor pollution. Smoking also puts even more pollution into the air.

Prepare your home and family ahead of summer wildfire season.

  1. Buy a certified ozone free portable air cleaner before there is a smoke event. Make sure it has high efficiency HEPA filters and it is the right size for the room.

  2. Ask an air conditioning professional what kind of high efficiency filters to use in your home’s system and how to close the fresh-air intake if your central air system or room air conditioner has one.

  3. Purchase a MERV 13 or higher filters for your HVAC system. Change your current filters before the season.

  4. Know how you will get alerts and health warnings, including air quality reports, public service announcements (PSAs), advisories and social media warning you about high fire risk or an active fire.
