Water Usage Restrictions – Reducing landscaping water usage during a drought.

Lakeview, Oregon, August 1, 2023 – Effective August 1 through October 31, 2023, the Town of Lakeview is implementing water restrictions for all water customers to help conserve our water while we are in drought conditions.

The restriction imposed by the Town of Lakeview for all water customers limits residential lawn watering. Specifically, customers are restricted from watering their lawns between the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the day. However, they are allowed to water their lawns in the evening after 4 p.m. or in the early morning before 10 a.m.

The purpose of this restriction is to reduce water usage during peak hours when evaporation rates are higher due to the sun’s intensity. By encouraging watering during the cooler hours, the Town aims to conserve water and promote more efficient water usage practices among its residents.

Watering tips: Lawn care experts say the best time to water grass is in the early morning, ideally before 10 a.m. During this time, the temperature outside is still relatively cool, and the wind and sun are less intense. This combination of factors allows water to soak into the soil and be absorbed by the grass roots before it can evaporate.

It is important to note that you should avoid watering your grass during the hottest part of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. During this time, the sun is at its strongest, and the water is more likely to evaporate before it can soak into the soil. This can lead to water waste and can also damage your grass by causing it to wilt or turn brown.

The second-best time to water your grass is in the early evening, after 4 p.m. At this time of day, the temperature is cooler, and the sun is not as intense, which means there is less evaporation. However, you should avoid watering your grass too late in the day, as this can promote the growth of fungus and other diseases. Watering your grass in the early evening gives the water time to soak into the soil before nightfall.

Most grasses require about 1-2 inches of water per week, which can be achieved through one or two deep watering sessions. Overwatering can lead to shallow root growth, disease, and pest problems. – Lawn Doctor
