Lakeview, Oregon – October 6, 2023 – The Lakeview Volunteer Fire Department is delighted to announce its selection as the recipient of the 2023 Volunteer Capacity Award. Service (USFS)ant, generously provided by the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) and the United States Forest Service (USFS), is aimed at strengthening the department’s wildfire response capabilities. Comprising two grants totaling $12,140.00, these funds will be exclusively allocated towards the acquisition of vital fire shelters and essential wildland equipment, significantly enhancing the department’s proficiency in combatting wildfires.

The purpose of the Volunteer Fire Capacity (VFC) Program is to assist fire departments in rural areas in improving their fire protection capabilities by providing financial, technical, and other assistance to organize, train and equip rural fire departments.

One notable aspect of this grant is that it operates as a 50/50 matching grant, requiring the Lakeview Volunteer Fire Department to contribute a matching amount as their commitment to the initiative. As part of their contribution, the department will provide in-kind training hours, ensuring that their personnel are well-trained and equipped to handle the challenges posed by wildfires.

Chief Morris, Lakeview Volunteer Fire Department, expressed gratitude for the grant, stating, “This grant is a significant milestone for our department, and it will greatly enhance our capabilities in responding to wildland fires. We are thankful to the Oregon Department of Forestry and the United States Forest Service for their continued support in strengthening our community’s resilience against wildfires.”

The funding provided by the grant will be instrumental in acquiring the necessary equipment and fire shelters required to safeguard firefighters’ lives while they work tirelessly to protect the community and natural resources from the threat of wildfires.

This grant exemplifies the Lakeview Volunteer Fire Department’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of the community and surrounding areas, particularly during the fire-prone seasons. The department remains dedicated to serving the public and responding to emergency situations promptly and effectively.
